What is M3U List?

As you know, you can stream IPTV on many devices and innumerous operating systems, using different applications. Moreover, streaming IPTV on VLC media player is quite a popular option for streaming all your favorite IPTV channels and various media content; not only is it highly compatible, but also it supports a number of different file formats such as M3U, M3U8 , PLS, XSPF, CON, WVX , IFO, CUE, ASX etc.

Firstly, one of the most prominent and most used text file formats for streaming IPTV is M3U or M3U URL, which is short for Moving Picture Experts Group Audio Layer 3 Uniform Resource Locator, also referred to as a Winamp playlist file. Secondly, the M3U, IPTV script, contains information regarding the channels, such as the channel source, URL, name, reference and country. A file that has an M3U file extension is often an audio playlist file; however, sometimes it may also refer to a video playlist file. It is worth noting that an M3U playlist is not, in fact, an actual audio file but rather a URL or a pathway to the media file.

Saving and Converting M3U Files

Because an M3U is just a text file, it is not possible to convert it to any media format such as MP3 or MP4; however, we can convert it to other playlist formats such as HTML or M3U8. This can be done by using certain applications like VLC or with the free Playlist Creator. Moreover, you can also convert the file to text if you wish to open it on a text editor.

On the other hand, M3U files are usually not made and saved from scratch. In a media player, you can use the options in the settings to save the currently playing songs to a playlist. Your M3U playlist may either consist of a relative path to the file or an absolute path. However, the advantage of using a relative path over an absolute path, is that the files could be moved to a new location or even a new device without having to maintain the functionality by making adjustments. Additionally, you may also refer to one M3U file from within another, but some media players may not support this.

Troubleshooting

If you are having problems with your M3U URL, and it does not work, primarily, check the link on your PC’s VLC media player. If it works, this means that when pasting or entering the link you may have added some spaces. Another reason your link might not work, is that you may be using your M3U link on another device as well, this will block your account and so the link won’t work. However, if you try the M3U link on your PC and it still doesn’t work, then you must contact your IPTV service provider.

Editing M3U Files

As mentioned above, the M3U file is a text file, so you can easily open it with a text editor software, such as notepad, then make your desired adjustments and save the file on your computer. Hence, you can use the edited file with your IPTV application.

Privacy and Security

Once you register for an IPTV account, your service provider will create and give you an M3U file that contains your username and password. Therefore, it is important you keep your file to yourself, otherwise, your data may be accessed by someone unauthorized. They may steal your data, and take over your account and make changes.

You can use M3U on a variety of devices: Roku, Android setup boxes, Smart TV, Smartphones and so on.
